This $12 Grocery Store Face Wash Changed My Approach to Skincare
My skin and I have a very complicated relationship. We've been through periods of true bliss and times of terror. We're that on-again, off-again couple you love to hate, like Ross and Rachel from Friends...except I have yet to see if we fall back in love in the end.
Often, I find myself internally screaming at my oily, acne-prone skin, wondering, What do you want from me??? Is it more moisturizer? Probably. More face masks? Maybe. Less of me picking at my face? Definitely. Every time a product reacts well to my skin, I consider it a small personal victory, one step closer to true love.

When I first picked up this $12 tea tree face wash in the aisle of Trader Joe's, I was skeptical. I've used pure tea tree oil to combat pimples before as it has anti-bacterial properties known to fight acne. I liked that it was gentle and effective and not filled with chemicals. However, I've only tried tea tree oil face wash when I found them randomly at friends' houses, in Airbnbs, etc. I never bit the bullet and bought one for myself. That's until right there, in between shelves of almond butter and sweet potato crackers, I saw one calling out my name. Do I dare?
I read through the ingredients and quickly grew more hesitant. One of the first ones listed was coconut oil, which I'd never put on my skin before because I heard it clogged pores and my skin is too sensitive for such a risk. But, I decided to give the random face wash a chance.
Now, months later, I'm happy to report that this face wash and I are getting along so well! While completely unlike the milky cleansers I used before, the oil-based wash lathers up into a very nice foam, and it leaves my skin feeling super clean and tight, but not dry or flakey. The oil ingredients don't clog my pores, and a little goes a long way. Knock on wood, but ever since I introduced this face wash into my life, I've had less severe breakouts and my oiliness seems to be more under control.
It's also opened up my mind to the possibility of trying even more oil-based products—something I would've never considered in my teenage years of wanting to completely dry out my shiny, slippery skin. (I've already ordered marula oil to see how we fair together.) Who would've thought this was all waiting for me in the aisle of the grocery store?
