Khloe Kardashian 'F*cking Works Out' When True's Asleep', OK?

It's been just over a year since Khloe Kardashian and Emma Grede launched Good American denim, with a lot of hype over the inclusive 0 to size 24 size range. The launch brought in $1 million dollars in sales on day one. Since then, the businesswoman have added sweatshirts, boyfriend jeans, bodysuits, and as of today, activewear to the Good American product lineup.

When I arrived to today's launch event the energy was, well, insane. Hoards of fans lined the streets around and in front of the Six: 02 store in Times Square, hoping to catch a glimpse of the panel that was about to begin. Inside, though, they were running late, and no one seemed to care. Rihanna blasted, and flavored seltzer was flowing.

A step group performed wearing the new line. Watching from above, Karadashian mouthed “that was everything” to Good Squad campaign stars like Basketball Wives' Evenlyn Lozada before taking the stage for a 10 minute chat with co-founder Emma Grede, moderated by fashion and beauty editor Kahlana Barfield. After the panel, I waded through fans to talk to Khloe about working out, body image, and mommy shamers.

EG: It's got 4-way stretch, it's moisture wicking, it’s gonna dry really quickly, it’s compression fabric. But what we’ve really focused on is the woman and the body. How does it look like on the woman? And how do it make you feel when it's on the body? That’s the biggest point of difference. That, and the size range because we’re really making things not only fit for purpose but also to make you look really great. Everything comes in XS to 4X.

KK: That’s what sets us apart. Everything goes from XS to 4X where some other performance lines, I won’t say names, they pick like six pieces or such a small amount and they dictate what they think women of shape should wear. Some women of shape want to be in the sexy, trendy thing and some of them are conservative—just like petite women. I don’t understand how a brand can dictate what someone else should be wearing. For us, we’re like fuck that, we’re going to let everyone have a choice just like we would let a petite woman. Let a person of shape do the same thing. It’s crazy.

KK: Honestly, I’m so proud of our visuals. I’ve heard a lot of brands say a lot of things, but it doesn't mean they walk the walk. Look, it’d be easier to just say, 'Oh you don’t want to take our full line, let’s bend our morals' but we’re not like that. This is our belief system and this is our core.

Whatever size or body shape my daughter has, I want her to be proud of it. I get so annoyed when people shame me for wanting to work out. It’s like, Oh I have a kid so I shouldn’t be working out, I should spend more time with her. First of all, I’m fucking working out when she’s asleep. But also, I’m proud that I’m working out because I want to be active for more child. For people who don’t want to work out, I’m not saying you have to do it my way. I'm just saying be proud of whatever role you choose to take. And with our visuals too. For True to see so many different women, women of color, of shape, different walks of life. It’s just individualism. And I’m proud that True is going to be able to see that, so she can hear our words. But also see our words. Other brands say they don’t want people to copy them, but we welcome it. We say please, join us, because its making a change for our children.

KK: It was the denim shopping experience. When I shopped, I always had to go to the very top floor, it felt like in the attic, shopping in the dark, while my sisters looked so cute and were served champagne, that sort of thing. Meanwhile, I’m like, I think there’s a spider by me. That was the experience. It’s embarrassing and you just feel defeated.

Emma has sisters who are bigger than her so it really made us want to stand our ground with everyone and say, "If you want to carry our line, great, but if you don’t have the full size range and keep it together than we’re not going to sell to you."

EG: It’s an uphill battle. Khloe is absolutely right, she said from the beginning, “this is a core principal of our brand.” Our brand is all about confidence. And the first thing is finding your size with your friend and not having to slink off to some corner to shop. We really bang on about it but it really is so important. This is the first time Six 02 is carrying expanded sizing. When we launched at Nordstrom it was the first time they put plus size with their “regular’ size options. We are really making a big change and breaking down barriers and we’re really proud of that.

KK: I do think things like “Oh my god, she’s going to be running around before I know it. She’s going to be active,” and I want to feel good. I don’t want to be one of those moms whose like "mommy is too tired to take you somewhere." Also it’s for my mental sanity. I don’t weigh myself everyday, I don’t care about that. If I look good in my clothes, I’m great. It’s not about the number on the scale.

KK: It’s so funny, I sent my sisters product months ago. And I love Kourtney to death but then my sisters come in like last week and gives me all these notes and I’m like listen...

KK: By video! With her tatas all up she was like, “I think I want a sports bra like this,” And I’m like "well you haven’t seen all of our stuff, thank you." Look, we love notes but if you’re going to give notes please don’t do it the day before our launch [laughs]. You’re being counterproductive.
